There’s one thing individual therapy can’t give you

Community

One-on-one therapy is powerful. But what happens in a group can’t be copied.

The relief of walking into a room where you aren’t the only one carrying this burden. The moment you say something out loud and see someone nod like they’ve carried it, too. The courage to show up, share your heart, and share in the camaraderie that comes when you work through challenges together.

Community isn’t a “nice to have.” It’s inextricably woven into the way God designed us to heal.

Breakthrough’s groups are small, structured, and led by licensed clinical therapists, not volunteers. We aren’t simply hoping for the best here — we’re giving you the people, and the practical tools, to actually get there.

Encourage one another and build each other up.

What to expect once you reach out

Here’s what Group Counseling at Breakthrough looks like

Fill out our interest form or join the waitlist for a specific group. We’ll reach out to learn a little more about what you’re looking for and make sure the group is the right fit.

Once a group is forming that fits your needs, we’ll confirm your spot, share what to expect, and answer any questions before the first session.

Groups meet weekly or biweekly depending on the format. We encourage you to attend and share regularly to get (and give!) the most support.

A note on cost: Group sessions are offered at a lower rate than individual therapy, and sliding scale options are available. We never want cost to prohibit people from receiving the care they need.

FAQs About Group Therapy in Sioux Falls

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

For many people and many challenges, yes — and sometimes more so. Research consistently shows that group therapy produces outcomes comparable to individual therapy for anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, and more. Hearing your own experience reflected back by someone who’s lived something similar can be powerful in a way one-on-one work can’t replicate.

Will I have to share personal things in front of strangers?

That’s your choice. You won’t be asked to disclose more than you’re ready to. That said, most people find that the openness of others tends to make you more open to sharing, too.

Is everything I share confidential?

Within the group, yes. All participants agree to confidentiality, and the therapist leading the group follows all HIPAA guidelines. As with individual therapy, there are a small number of legally required exceptions your therapist will explain upon joining.

Can I do group therapy and individual therapy at the same time?

Absolutely. While it’s not necessary to do group therapy alongside individual therapy, many people find they reach their goals faster with both. Your individual therapist and group facilitator can coordinate care (with your permission) to make sure your treatment works together.

Who leads the groups?

Every Breakthrough group is led by a licensed therapist or supervised clinician. Groups are not peer-led or volunteer-facilitated. Clinical oversight is built into every session.

Because smaller groups create more intimacy (and more transformation), spots in each Breakthrough group are limited. If you’re interested in joining one, let us know. We’ll reach out as groups form to confirm your fit and reserve your spot.
