You want your child to experience all the goodness God has in mind for them. So when they experience emotional, behavioral, or spiritual issues instead, you feel lost.

The key to helping kids and teens overcome anxiety, aggression, depression, or whatever else is clouding them is a Christian therapist they can truly connect with. At Breakthrough, we specialize in talk and play therapy that centers on Scripture, delivers real outcomes, and is enjoyable for kids and teens.

You can take a deep breath. The breakthrough you’ve been hoping for is here.

The approaches we offer for your child:

Kids (ages 5–12)

Younger children often communicate their needs through behavior before they can name them. Play therapy gives kids a natural way to process and heal, using the language they already speak.

Teens (ages 13–18)

Adolescence is complicated enough without adding anxiety, identity questions, social pressure, and faith doubts. We offer your teen a supportive space and perspective from a trained professional to help them through this time of transition.

Consider the benefits of family therapy

While we honor a teen’s need for trust and confidentiality, parents are encouraged to participate in the child’s care plan when appropriate. Siblings and other family members may attend family therapy sessions as well.

“Few people really understand what you are going through, and you start to wonder if you are the only ones that are going through this sort of thing. But once we found Breakthrough and the right therapist for our child, their attitude and behavior changed in a positive way which, in turn, caused a positive shift in the family. School got better for them, relationships started to flourish, and life got better for all of us.”

What to expect once you reach out

Here’s what spiritual counseling at Breakthrough looks like

During this 50-minute meeting, your therapist will get to know you, asking about your current concerns, personal and family history, and support systems. At the end, you’ll be able to set up your next appointment.

Everyone’s treatment plan looks a little different. Drawing on clinical best practices and your own faith values, your therapist will recommend an approach tailored to your specific needs, goals, and lifestyle. You’ll know exactly what you’re working toward and why.

Therapy works best when it’s consistent. While your cadence may vary, we usually recommend attending therapy sessions weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Your therapist will check in on your progress, adjust the approach as needed, and celebrate the wins with you — because we’re sincerely invested in your breakthrough.

FAQs About Teen Counseling in Sioux Falls

How do I know if my child actually needs therapy, or if this is just a phase?

Signs your child could benefit from counseling include persistent sadness, anxiety affecting their school or friendships, significant behavioral changes, or withdrawing from what they once loved. Other signs are subtler, like a nagging sense that something’s off. If you’re asking the question, it’s worth exploring. A conversation at Breakthrough can clarify whether therapy is right for your child — no commitment required.

Will my child’s therapist tell me what they say in sessions?

Confidentiality applies to minors too, with some important nuances. For younger children, parents are more actively involved. For teens, therapists protect the specific content of sessions while discussing general themes and progress with parents. It’s a fine line: your teen needs to trust this space is safe, and you need to know how to support them at home. Your therapist will be clear about how they handle privacy and parent involvement from day one.

What if my child refuses to go to therapy?

Hesitation toward new experiences is common, especially among children. A few things that can help encourage your child to willingly attend therapy include:

  • Framing the first session as just a conversation, not a commitment
  • Letting them have some say in which therapist they meet
  • Reminding them this isn’t because something is wrong with them, but because you want them to have someone in their corner

Sometimes the child’s resistance softens once they’re actually in the room. If they continue to refuse to engage, we’ll discuss the best path forward.
